The Schifani council has declared a state of crisis and regional emergency for the areas of Messina affected by the heavy rains that fell between 18 and 20 August. In three days, rainfall reached 120-140 millimeters in various locations in the Messina Tyrrhenian Sea, causing local flooding, debris spills and landslideswithout serious consequences for the population, thanks to a good regional and municipal alert system.
The territories most affected were those of Brolo, Piraino, Gioiosa Marea, Naso, Sinagra, Ficarra, as well as Capo d’Orlando and Castell’Umbertowhere the respective municipalities reported no damage.
The regional department of Civil Protection, in proposing the state of emergency, carried out an estimate of the damage, which amounts to a total of just over 3 million euros, based on the data provided by the Municipalities and private individuals. In particular, there are 70 requests from private individuals and companies for an amount of almost 1.2 million. Instead, local administrations report damages of almost 900 thousand euros. And finally, the estimate to finance the works to remove the residual risk amounts to one million.
