Home management and maintenance costs have literally skyrocketed in the last 10 years, pushed up by soaring bills. Given an inflation of around 23% from 2015 to today, the price of electricity has increased by as much as 74%, that of gas by over 39% and that of water by as much as 47.6%.
There is only one item that recorded a negative trend in the price index: that relating to large household appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines, which were 1.5% cheaper in 2025 compared to 10 years ago.
The data was processed by Confconstruction which, in an ad hoc study, underlines how over the years, there has been a much more significant increase in fixed expenses – from bills to maintenance interventions – compared to other consumption items, such as household appliances, which only occasionally impact a family’s budget.
Looking at the current year, the costs relating to water supply, as highlighted by the owners’ organization in the study published online, are also those that have seen the greatest inflation: +4.8% between June, July and August, and +4.7% in September, after increases of more than 6% at the beginning of 2025. The growth in the cost of waste collection is more moderate, however, in the month of September at 1.8%, after a long period of increases of more than 3%. The costs of some essential services for domestic life, such as repairs and maintenance of buildings, have also made themselves felt: since April, with the sole exception of July, the annual growth rate has never fallen below 3%.
For gas and electricity, however, after a series of spring increases, September was a month of decline in prices, by 5.6% and 5.8% respectively.
Limited increases are those that have affected other products and services, such as furniture and furnishings, which last month saw an increase of 0.9%, in line with that which occurred in the last year, and which in 10 years have become more expensive by 20.9%, less than average inflation. Worthy of note are household appliances, whose prices fell by 1.5% in September. The decline, explains Confedilizia, was driven above all by large ones, such as refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers, which saw a reduction in prices of 2.5% on September 2024 and even 1.5% in the ten years from 2015. It is not exactly the same for small household appliances, such as blenders or irons, which, after a phase of falling prices, saw an increase, albeit slight. Compared to the last decade, the increases were minimal, only 0.7%. The increases in products such as crockery and household utensils are also limited, +0.9% per year in September and +11.9% in 10 years, or in garden equipment, +1% and +9.1% respectively.
