“In 2024 and 2025 the Calabria Region will be the protagonist and ambassador of the Jubilee of the Catholic Church in Italy and abroad”. This was communicated by the Tourism Councilor of the Calabria Region, Giovanni Calabreseon the occasion of the annual assembly of the ANCI during which the project “Tourism of roots in 2025. The Jubilee of the Calabrians” was presented.
“The Calabria Region – explained the councilor -, as part of its annual operational plan dedicated to tourism and the strengthening of relations between Italy and diasporic communities in the world, intends to invite Calabrian communities in the world to participate in the Jubilee 2025 and, on this occasion, to visit the Region (land of origin) and its religious attractors”.
In the space of the Calabria Region, the tourist promotion action was illustrated together with Agostino Miozzocoordinator for the Jubilee of the Catholic Church 2025, ea Dario Corteseof the general directorate for Italians abroad and migration policies – Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also present at the initiative were the deputy chief of staff, Maria Canterini, and, for the regional tourism department led by the directorate Maria Antonella Cauterucciothe official Luca Fregola.
The Calabria Region, in second place in Italy for the number of ecclesiastical museums and at the forefront in the process of valorising religious tourism as a distinctive asset of the country system, has defined with the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Matteo Maria, and with Monsignor Fortunato Morrone, president of the Calabrian Episcopal Conference, a path of collaboration with the Holy See to make Calabria an “Ambassador Region” of the Jubilee 2025.
The President of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiutopromoter of this activity which he defined as “a bridge between the Region and generations of all ages of Calabrians and pilgrims in the world”, also involved the presidents of the Episcopal Conference of Argentina, Australia, Brazil and Canada , of the United States of America, nations where the largest number of Calabrians is present.
“There is an invitation – added the Councilor for Tourism – to all the Calabrian communities in the world to participate in the Jubilee and, on this occasion, to visit our Region, also offering the possibility of building ad hoc tourist itineraries or religious/tourist places and sanctuaries or religious paths. The Region also offers a variety of festivals and pilgrimages to Marian sanctuaries in an engaging and meaningful experience, offers numerous places that combine the search for spirituality with historical-cultural interest and many of the main stages of Religious Tourism in Calabria are consistent with the 2025 Jubilee Calendar”.
“Calabria – Calabrese finally recalled – has 7 million Calabrians in the world who, on the occasion of the Jubilee, could come to Calabria to learn about our history, places and religious events, and for this reason we have put in place a working group to coordinate the active promotion of a territory strongly committed to building solid relationships with the Calabrians in the world. Meanwhile, the Jubilee 2025 working group and the Tourism department are defining offers and packages, with dedicated discounts, promoted by tour operators, hospitality, national and territorial mobility carriers, and other operators intended for travelers also in possession of the Pilgrim’s Card , also involving agreements with institutions and public and private entities”.
“Calabria – said Miozzo – has planned a fundamental action that will attract thousands of tourists, creating important flows, managing to intercept millions of Calabrians, almost 10% of Italians in the world, thus creating an opportunity for return and valorisation of tourist destinations, visiting places, sanctuaries and rediscovering religious traditions”.
