Cassano and the entire Sibaritide woke up in a heavy, almost unnatural silence. Mayor Gianpaolo Iacobini expressed «absolute closeness to the families involved, affected by a tragedy that leaves us speechless and disarmed. Our community loses two splendid young people, two smiles that would have brightened the future.” Deep emotion also in the school world. The ISS “Erodoto da Thurii”, attended by Chiara and Antonio, released a note which reads: «They were loved and respected students, discreet, sensitive young people, capable of bringing kindness into the classrooms and among their classmates. The whole school clings to the families in an embrace that they would like to protect, but which today can only share the pain.”
Also joining in the condolences were Asd Cassano Sibari and Francesco Corrado, of the Calabria Regional Committee and president of the GSC Armando Gatto, both historic sporting realities of the area: «Today we mourn two boys who belonged to our community as sons, friends, brothers. In the face of such a great tragedy, football stops and only silence remains.” The bishop, Francesco Savino, delivered words of consolation to the wounded community: «Our silence weighs like a stone. Antonio and Chiara are the Gospel of the grain of wheat: it dies, but it bears fruit. We don’t say goodbye, but see you soon: God doesn’t divide, he puts things back together. Don’t let death have the last word: let it be love.”
