A widowed mother and her two daughters with disabilities, both unable to walk, forced to live in public housing on the fourth floor without a lift. This is the situation reported to the Municipality of Catanzaro by the lawyer Francesco Pitaro, who warned the administration asking for the assignment of a home compatible with the health conditions of the two young women.

As highlighted by the lawyer, the legislation provides a preferential lane for families in which there are people with disabilities in the assignment or change of accommodation.

The municipality’s response

After the warning, with a note dated 2 March 2026, the Municipality recognized the priority for cases like the one reported and invited the president of the Mobility Commission to examine the request presented by the woman.

With a new deed notified yesterday and also sent to the Prefecture of Catanzaro and to the Mobility Commission at Aterp Calabria, the lawyer Pitaro however insisted that suitable accommodation be assigned to the family within ten days, also underlining the presence of an apartment on the ground floor in the same building in which the family currently resides.

“We need an immediate response”

The lawyer also asked for the intervention of the Prefecture, highlighting the seriousness of the situation involving “fragile and disabled people”. In case of failure to respond within the indicated deadline, the possibility of appealing to the judicial authorities for alleged omissive and discriminatory conduct was announced.

«We acknowledge the communication from the Municipality which finally recognizes priority for families with disabled people and the failure to evaluate the request presented about two years ago – declared the lawyer Francesco Pitaro – but now we need to act quickly. It is necessary to assign suitable accommodation to the two disabled daughters. Humanity, timeliness and respect for the rights provided by law are needed to avoid discrimination and marginalization.”
