The Carabinieri of Sellia Marina (CZ), with the support of the Catanzaro Forestry Group, carried out an extraordinary control service of the territory prepared by the Provincial Command.
The operation took place on the Ionian coastal strip, which goes from Simeri Crichi to Belcastro, concentrating along the SS 106, a road artery of fundamental importance for the territory, often the site of serious road accidents.
The military’s objectives were, on the one hand, road safety, in terms of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. On the other hand, the monitoring of heavy vehicles with the aim of targeting any illicit trafficking of waste materials.
The results were not long in coming. During the checks, it was in fact ascertained that two young people were driving with a blood alcohol level far higher than the permitted level, behavior which resulted in both being reported and having their cars stopped. Six other motorists were fined for not wearing a seat belt and for using a telephone while driving. Two licenses withdrawn. Over fifty vehicles checked and hundreds of people identified. Furthermore, a lorry driver was reported to the Judicial Authority, as he was transporting fifteen tons of non-hazardous waste without the required authorization. The vehicle was seized.
As regards the fight against illegal conduct in the field of the environment, thanks to the synergistic collaboration of the forestry specialty, two farmers were also sanctioned while they were illegally cutting seventy-seven olive trees subject to restrictions by the regional law on the valorisation of the olive-growing heritage, with a fine of 77,000 euros for them.
