Two initiatives have “displaced” the Messina centre-left. While the Democratic Party, together with the M5S, Avs and the other forces of the “wide field” (including Ismaele La Vardera’s Countercurrent movement), tried to set the programmatic lines and the method for choosing the mayoral candidate and his team, here is the first twist.
The coordinators of Green Europe and the Left, at the table gathered two days ago, put forward the name of Paolo Todaro, the Uil biologist and trade unionist, appreciated by many for his social commitment, for his “no Bridge” ideas and for the battles waged within the University. «It was said “no names for now”», was the response of the provincial secretary of the Democratic Party, Armando Hyerace, and of the representatives of the Five Star movement. But Todaro is a name that is also liked by the M5S and some sectors of the Democratic Party itself.
But here is the second “unforeseen” event: the online petition in support of Alessandro Russo’s candidacy. In a few hours, almost 500 people signed the appeal. And the city councilor himself, after a phase of reflection, cast off his moorings and said he was ready to leave for this exciting journey, obviously if the choice of the coalition fell on his name.
Within the Democratic Party, there also remains a part of supporters of the candidacy of Antonella Russo, the other combative municipal councilor of the Democratic Party, who for years has carried out her role of opposition in the Council and of social commitment. «She would be Angela Bottari’s ideal candidate», many say, remembering the late “pasionaria” of the Left. Furthermore, the candidate would finally be a woman, in an electoral scenario which is confirmed, even in this round, to be absolutely “male chauvinist”.
