“Another intervention for the coastline of the Municipality of Reggio Calabria; this time it will be the ‘Scalo’ district of Bocale that will benefit from a provision to stem coastal erosion” – these are the words of the Acting Mayor of the Metropolitan City Carmelo Versace who, during the inspection for the delivery of the works, added: “An intervention already planned, and the result of a project developed years ago, which will allow the Metropolitan City in synergy with the Calabria Region, to mitigate the inconveniences and critical issues related to the defense of the coast”.

Acting Mayor Versace underlined that these are important resources with over 350,000 euros in total, of which 220,000 for works, for the completion of the works expected in 90 days, for the positioning of two so-called ‘groynes’, (breakwater cliffs positioned vertically with respect to the beach) to protect the entire area from coastal erosion and the consequent emptying of the beach.

Also present was the Managing Director Giuseppe Marino who declared: “The Metropolitan City once again demonstrates its attention to an important piece of the city’s coast, which is the Bocale coast. An intervention that had already been planned years ago and which does not refer to the emergency of the last few days linked to bad weather or Cyclone Harry, but rather to a broader program that concerns solutions for the coastal strip that goes from Pellaro to Capo d’Armi”.

“A district that has been waiting for years – concluded Marino – for a decisive intervention with respect to the damage suffered during strong storm surges. But we also know that there are other neighborhoods that need as many mitigating interventions; for this reason, the Metropolitan City is forcefully requesting further resources from the Calabria Region to deal with the requests coming from citizens who have suffered damage due to the storm surges of recent days”.
