With the wave of frost that is hitting the area, the solidarity machine in Crotone does not stop. The municipality’s social workers, in close collaboration with the Italian Red Cross, are working tirelessly to provide assistance and shelter to the numerous homeless people in the city.

A complex intervention which sees the active involvement not only of the municipal administration, but also of the Prefecture, the Police Headquarters and the entire Third Sector sector, which contributes with operators and cultural mediators to manage the reception and volunteering services.

Emergency numbers

The social pressure is evident in the numbers: on Saturday alone, around 58 interviews were carried out for social care. The objective is to identify the most suitable solution for each individual case, although the path is often hindered by rigid regulatory constraints.

The knot of hospitality: between law and vulnerability

The Councilor for Social Policies, Filly Pollinzi, wanted to clarify the management of flows and legislative competences: “The majority of people intercepted are in legal situations for which only intervention in first reception facilities is permitted, which by law are under government competence and subject to verification of available places”.

The Municipality can intervene directly with its emergency structures mainly in cases of vulnerability, or for people in possession of medical certification attesting to their precarious state of health. For those who hold a regular residence permit or have certified fragilities, the procedure for inclusion in the SAI Network (second reception) has been started, subject to ministerial authorisation.

Social Emergency Response: a 24-hour service

The Social Emergency Service (PIS) of the Social Sector of Crotone guarantees an immediate response. Managed by the Italian Red Cross under the coordination of the professional social service, the PIS remains operational 24 hours a day to monitor the streets and intervene in the most critical situations.
