Collection of signatures and lists in Messina: the issue, the questions raised and the Region’s response

Behind the scenes of this electoral campaign, there are those who have been addressing for weeks – and those who are continuing to do so in these hours – an issue which is apparently only procedural, bureaucratic, but which in reality is the classic form that becomes substance, because it can make all the difference in the world. It is the thorny issue of collecting signatures for the presentation of lists and candidatures: it is obligatory for everyone (think, for example, of the mayoral candidates Gaetano Sciacca and Lillo Valvieri, but also of some lists in support of Marcello Scurria), except for those parties that have a group elected to the Ars, the regional parliament. At the beginning of March, the group leader of the South calls North to the Ars, its leader Cateno De Luca, posed a question to the regional department of Local Autonomy, which we summarize and simplify as follows: if instead of using it once, the symbol of the South calls North, I use it several times, inserting it within the markings of other lists (specifically 14, plus the party list), am I still exempt from collecting signatures? The answer was affirmative, the Prefecture, having accepted it, also disseminated it to the Municipalities called to vote – including that of Messina – and to the respective electoral commissions, but it did not at all convince some political secretaries, who have been trying to understand more about it for a couple of days.
