An “isolated” community, hostage to a “fragile road system” and local public transport reduced “to a minimum”.
It is the formal complaint presented by the political movement “GioiosAttiva” which sent an urgent warning to the bus company Magistro, the prefect, the leaders of the Region, Anas and the mayor of Gioiosa Marea.
At the center of the protest is the dramatic cut in bus travel on the Gioiosa Marea – Messina route: a decision that would bring commuters and university students to their knees.
The problem arises from landslides recorded on State Road 113, in the Torre Ciaule area (between Gliaca di Piraino and Gioiosa Marea), where Anas has imposed a ban on vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes. However, the ordinance provides for an explicit exemption for public transport vehicles weighing up to 6 tonnes, introduced precisely to avoid the isolation of inhabited centres. Despite the exemption, the concessionaire company would still have chosen to divert its large buses onto the A20, between the Patti and Brolo toll booths. The result? The suppression of the historic stops in the town of Gioiosa Marea and in the coastal hamlets, forcing commuters to work impossible hours and to incur costs that have almost doubled.
