The leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Franco Corbelli, launches an appeal to Pope Leo to, after his visit to Lampedusa, also go to Tarsia to visit the International Migrant Cemetery under construction, a work intended to give burial and dignity to the victims of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.

«An ideal bridge between Lampedusa and Tarsia»

Corbelli expressed appreciation for the Pontiff’s visit to Lampedusa and for the reminder addressed to Europe on its responsibilities in managing the migration phenomenon. Hence the invitation to reach Tarsia, where the construction of the cemetery is underway which will be named after little Alan Kurdi and will be built near the former Ferramonti internment camp, a place chosen for its symbolic value.

Work resumed after the stop

The project, supported by the Calabria Region and implemented by the Municipality of Tarsia, was started before suffering an interruption due to the pandemic and the exhaustion of the initial funds. Work resumed in October last year thanks to new regional funding.
