An “incomprehensible” act that undermines the “constitutional duties” of the university. The controversy arising from the University of Bologna’s failure to accept the Modena Academy’s proposal to organize a philosophy course reserved for officer students, revealed last Saturday by the Army Chief of Staff, Carmine Masiello, is rising in tone. The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, condemns the choice: “I believe – she states – that the decision taken by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Bologna is an incomprehensible and seriously wrong act”. This is “not only an unacceptable choice, but a gesture detrimental to the constitutional duties that underpin the autonomy of the University”. And this, he underlines, is because, «as a center of pluralism and discussion, it has the duty to welcome and enhance every path of cultural elevation, remaining totally alien to ideological prejudices. This refusal implies a questioning of the very role of the Armed Forces, a fundamental safeguard for the defense and security of the Republic, as provided for by the Constitution”.
