The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has just arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for an institutional mission to the Gulf countries. This is, underline sources from Palazzo Chigi, the first visit to the region by an EU, G20 and NATO leader since the beginning of the conflict, with meetings scheduled with the main representatives of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The objective, the sources continue, is to strengthen relations with these nations and reiterate Italy’s support in the face of Iranian attacks, while consolidating an increasingly solid strategic partnership. The mission also aims to strengthen national energy security: the Gulf represents a crucial source of oil and gas for Italy and plays a decisive role in the trend of global energy prices.
The mission, we learn from the same sources, will last two days.
Bignami: proud of Meloni’s commitment against the energy crisis
«President Meloni’s institutional mission to the Gulf countries, the first in the Region, represents a very important signal. She is the first Western leader since the beginning of the war in Iran to go to this extremely dangerous area, and she is doing so to strengthen Italy’s energy security and identify or improve our oil supply channels. An initiative that follows the equally important one in Algeria a few days later. Thanks to Giorgia Meloni, our nation is attentive and protects itself from the risks of a global crisis. Giorgia Meloni and her government are moving forward and Fratelli d’Italia is proud of what is being done to counter this delicate international situation.” This was declared by the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Chamber of Deputies, Galeazzo Bignami.
Braga: Melons in the Gulf with the illusion of seeking answers to the energy crisis
«Meloni tries to put 5000 km between her and undersecretaries in business with people close to the Camorra, ministers accused of defrauding the state, others who embarrass the institutions. She escapes from Rome not with a peace plan, but to try to save herself from 15 million No votes and from a country alarmed by the costs of shopping and fuel. Instead of supporting Europe and insisting on a peace solution, he sets out with the illusion of seeking answers to the energetic crisis, regardless of the strength and diplomatic tradition in the Middle East that Italy has represented for decades and which he could have exercised in all these months, favoring dialogue without the obstinate refusal to condemn the unfortunate choices of his friend Trump and Netanyahu. The end of the line for a government isolated in Europe and frowned upon at home is ever closer.” Thus in a note Chiara Braga, Leader of the Democratic Party in the Chamber of Deputies.
Prc: Melons in the Gulf not for energy security but for subordination to the war
«Giorgia Meloni’s blitz in the Persian Gulf, presented as a mission for energy security, is in reality yet another confirmation of the subordination of the Italian government to the geopolitical and military logic that is fueling tensions in the Middle East. The Prime Minister strengthens relations with authoritarian monarchies and continues to tie Italy’s future to oil and gas, instead of focusing on autonomy and renewables. Far from energy security: we are witnessing a policy that intertwines energy and war, while millions of families pay the price of high energy prices and the government limits itself to stopgap measures. Instead of investing immediately in efficiency, ecological transition and alternative sources, agreements are pursued in crisis areas, increasing dependence and risks for the country. There is no emergency that justifies wrong strategic choices. Using the excuse that there is “no time” to not focus on alternatives means worsening the structural crisis. True energy security is built by reducing dependence, accelerating renewables and aiming for a foreign policy of peace, disarmament and cooperation, in full compliance with Article 11 of the Constitution. Continuing on the path of fossil fuels and missions in theaters of war means exposing the country to instability, subordination and permanent crisis.” This was declared by Giovanni Barbera, of the national direction of Rifondazione Comunista.
