She has been released from prison awaiting sentencing on November 27th Maysoon Majdithe Kurdish-Iranian activist known for her commitment to defending women’s rights. The circumstantial evidence against him was completely distorted by the statements of witnesses in court today. His lawyer had therefore formulated a request for immediate acquittal and, in the alternative, a request for release.

The young woman had fled Iran due to political persecution, but she was arrested in Italy in December 2023 on charges of migrant smuggling.

Together with other migrants, he crossed the Mediterranean to escape repression, but she was accused of being involved in the management of the vessel that took them to Italy.

The evidence against her includes testimonies from other migrants, who said that Maysoon distributed food and maintained order during the voyage, although she made it clear that she was not piloting the boatrole held by a Turkish man. Despite this, Maysoon was detained, accused of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, a crime for which many migrants are prosecuted in Italy, especially after the introduction of the Cutro Decree in 2023.

Maysoon’s case has attracted the attention of human rights organizations and activists, who argue that, like many others, she is being scapegoated by Europe’s migration policies. He spent several months in prison, during which he lost a lot of weight and went on a hunger strike to protest his detention.

His lawyers have maintained his innocence, underlining his role as an activist and the fact that there is no risk of flight.
