“We hope that that full light be shed on a tragedy that could and should have been avoided and that all responsibilities be identified quickly”. This is what he declares Manuelita Scigliano, spokesperson for the February 26 Networkhaving learned the news of the conclusion of the investigations by the Crotone Prosecutor’s Office into the delays in the rescue of the caicco ‘Summer Love’, loaded with migrants and shipwrecked in Steccato di Cutro on the night of February 26, 2023. A real massacre, which caused the death of 94 people and an unspecified number of missing, for which six people are being investigated, four financial police officers and two Coast Guard soldiers.

“We are comforted by the fact that the investigation has not been closed, however we hope that all possible further responsibilities will be explored, especially political ones, so that we do not have to witness other massacres at sea in the future. It is clear that what happened was not the consequence of the error of an individual, but of a system that allows similar tragedies to occur. We expect that the eventual trial will do full justice on the events of that night, about which, we are convinced, the whole truth has not yet emerged” adds Scigliano.

The spokesperson for the coordination, born precisely following the Steccato di Cutro shipwreck, therefore expresses “partial satisfaction, also on behalf of the families of the victims and survivors, who, after more than a year and a half, are still waiting for the government’s promises on family reunifications to be kept”.
