«Refreshments are important but we need a medium- and long-term look. This is why we ask that concrete work be done to move the expiry of the concessions from 2027 to 2033.” This is what the president of Assobalneari Confindustria Calabria, Giuseppe Nucera, asks, explaining that “the Calabrian beach establishments hit by Cyclone Harry are dealing with significant damage and the immediate need to restore structures, services and safety in view of the summer season”.

«The first refreshments announced and the emergency contributions – he states in a note – represent useful help to address the most urgent difficulties. However, for many businesses this is not enough. Those who have suffered extensive damage will have to face new expenses with the uncertainty of too short a horizon ahead.”

Nucera explains that in recent days he met with the vice-president of the Calabria regional council, Filippo Mancuso, asking «for the convening of an institutional table dedicated to the topic of maritime state concessions. A table – he underlines – which cannot remain confined to the regional level, but which must involve the national government, because the issue concerns the economic stability of a strategic sector for work, tourism and services along the entire Calabrian coast”.

«Mancuso – concludes Nucera – has proven to be sensitive and fully informed on the topic, ensuring that the issue will be brought to the attention of the national government through the minister and vice-president of the Council Matteo Salvini. We hope that the president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, thanks to his national political role, can also play an active role so that the government brings to Brussels the extension of the seaside concessions to 2033, so as to overcome the critical issues of the Bolkestein directive”.
