An immersion in the history of Syracuse and in Christianity but also a reflection on the path of Christian life inside the catacomb. Visiting the catacombs of San Giovanni in Syracuse is a unique experience. Doing it during the night allows you to experience a moment of meditation listening to the “thunderous silence”. All this And «Strepitus Silentii … the nights of the catacombs»the theatrical night visits created to discover the catacombs of San Giovanni in a different way.

This year the route in the Christian cemetery turns twenty and to celebrate it the Kairós company, with the Inspectorate for the Catacombs of Eastern Sicily, the Custody of the Catacombs of Syracuse and the Diocesan Office for the Pastoral of Tourism of the Archdiocese of Syracuse, proposes a version of the visit with new dynamics of scenic interaction and new sounds.

The path, marked by the voices of the actors and the sounds of the flute, the Sicilian whistle, the clarinet and even the bagpipe, winds through the underground galleries. An experience of silence that in our contemporary world today corresponds only to solitude, emptiness or a sense of loss. And instead the catacomb, a place of burial and silence, will speak more than ever of new life. The voices are those of Lorenzo Falletti, Doriana La Fauci, Caterina Pugliese and Marinella Scognamiglio. The music is by Romualdo Trionfante and Luciano Maria Moricca. And with the participation of little Agnese Dente, 12 years old, who will lead the visitors by the hand.

The appointment is for every weekend in August (Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a double visit at 9:00 pm and 10:30 pm). And on Saturday 31st there will be the participation of Paolino Uccello, documentary maker and president of the Ecomuseum of the Iblei, protagonist of a tribute to Saint Lucia in front of the epigraph of Euskia, discovered by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi in the catacombs, probably the first attestation of the cult of the martyr Lucia.

The second intervention will be between history and legend looking at the excellences of our land. To celebrate 20 years, Kairos has also created three special events, developing an international version of «Strepitus Silentii». It has asked for the collaboration of the Academy of Ancient Drama of the Inda Foundation to create a version dedicated to the thousands of tourists who have participated in recent years. Not a translation into English, but a version accessible to anyone, in Italian, English, French, Spanish, Greek and Sicilian. The performers are Michele Carvello, Eleonora Acquaviva and Andrea Bassoli, actors of the Academy. The version is edited by Michele Dell’Utri with the collaboration of Giulia Valentini.
