Kelvin Kiptummarathon world record holder, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a tragic car accident on Sunday 11 February. Kiptum, a 24-year-old Kenyan, set the world record at the Chicago Marathon last October with a time of 2:00:35, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge’s previous record. He was preparing for the Paris Olympic Games and had planned to race in Rotterdam to further improve his time. The accident occurred on a road between Eldoret and Kaptagat in western Kenya, a region renowned for training long-distance runners.
