The Municipality of Crotone is about to start monitoring the quality of air and water in the area where the large warehouse in the Vescovatello area is located which in the past hosted the general fruit and vegetable market. The body led by mayor Vincenzo Voce intends to involve the regional agency for environmental protection in Calabria to begin control activities on the site where asbestos is present. The Municipality's intention was made known by the Environmental Council following the hearing held last May 24 with the mayor and the Environment Councilor, Angela Maria De Renzo.
The meeting was requested by the body chaired by Sandro Tricoli following the indictment of Gregorio Ciliberto, the 83-year-old administrator of the company “Ciliberto spa” for failure to remediate the site. The Crotone Prosecutor's Office, which last year obtained the seizure of the three-span dilapidated building from the investigating judge, accuses Ciliberto of failing to comply with the order issued in 2020 by the Piazza della Resistenza body which had asked for the removal of the asbestos that covers the property and to redevelop the area adjacent to it.
