A 2024 that has so far been, so to speak, chameleonic for Jannik SinnerA brilliant start to the year for the South Tyrolean tennis player, culminating with a magnificent victory at the Australian Open against the Russian Medvedev. A 2024 that couldn’t have started better on the back of a great end to 2023 that saw him rapidly rise to the ATP Finals in Turin in November where he lost in the final against Djokovic and then triumph in the Davis Cup in Malaga with Italy.

Then, as mentioned, a huge tournament in Australia, the first Slam tournament in the trophy cabinet and a year that promises to be full and full of victories. Sinner triumphs again on the cement of the Miami Masters 1000, but in the spring the problems on the red clay begin. It all begins in the Monte Carlo tournament where the Italian is eliminated by the Greek Tsitsipas, then physical problems arrive. He plays the Madrid tournament and has problems in the match against the Russian Khachanov: he wins the match, but then he is forced to withdraw and also skips the Rome tournament. He recovers for the Roland Garros where for the first time in his career he reaches the semifinals being eliminated in the fifth set by Carlos Alcaraz.

On June 10th the apotheosis with the news of having become the world’s number onethe first Italian in history to reach this extraordinary milestone. The very short grass season begins and Sinner wins the ATP 500 tournament in Halle. Then he arrives at Wimbledon and stops in the quarterfinals beaten by Medvedev. From there it seems like a reset of mind and muscles towards the Paris Olympics: he is photographed by paparazzi at the seaside with his new girlfriend, the Russian Anna Kalinskaya. He trains for the event of the year, but in the end today’s announcement arrives: retirement due to tonsillitis, after he had delayed his departure for Paris due to fever.
