Calabria with bated breath. The financial suffering of families and businesses is like a livid dust that continues to widen the stretch marks of an increasingly less vigorous spending capacity. War and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have turned the energy market into a new source of pressure. Commercial vessel traffic through the strategic passage remains severely reduced and oil continues to embed geopolitical risk in its price. Even when prices decline, as is happening in these hours, the effect on consumers does not disappear but arrives with a delay (the fault of the asymmetric transmission of prices according to the “rocket-feather” metaphor), remains in the supply chains and is deposited on transport and production costs.
In Calabria the bill is particularly heavy. According to the latest update from the Mimit Price Observatory, as of yesterday self-service petrol costs on average 2.178 euros per litre, while diesel reaches 2.355 euros. These are among the highest values in Italy. Compared to the beginning of the year, when the prices indicated were 1,627 and 1,677 euros respectively, the increase is in the order of 34% for petrol and 40% for diesel. Translated into the daily language of family budgets: a 50 liter tank of petrol has gone from 81.35 to 108.90 euros, with an increase of 27.55 euros. For diesel the jump was even greater: from 83.85 to 117.75 euros, i.e. 33.90 euros more. Three full tanks a month can mean over one hundred euros disappearing from the budget even before paying a bill or shopping or paying for a health service.
