The Christian Workers Movement of Messina also joins the chorus of voices expressing solidarity with the 49 families of Cargill workers, who see the unfortunate possibility of dismissal wanted by the multinational, producer of pectin, located in the industrial area of Giammoro, increasingly approaching.
If the relevant institutions do nothing to avert the danger, all workers will find themselves without jobs by the end of January. Not only that: the contribution protections to accompany those who are close to reaching retirement will also be missing.
We make our own the appeal of the Diocesan Pastoral Care for Social Problems and Work, as well as that of all the trade unions involved in this dispute, to reiterate the inviolable right to work in order to guarantee the full integrity and dignity of the person.
There do not appear to be any particularly relevant and plausible reasons justifying the decision taken by the company, without however making use of a serious prior discussion with workers, social partners and institutions. Instead, the conditions must be created so that other business groups can easily acquire the plant, maintaining the current employment levels and existing production: for this reason the Provincial Presidency of MCL Messina requests that all possible negotiations be started immediately at the tables of the competent Ministry and Regional Department, with the aim of seeking solutions that protect the future employment and family well-being of the several dozen workers involved.
