The Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, chaired by Andrea Agostinellihas issued an ordinance, currently being published, «to support the growth of port traffic in the ports of Gioia Tauro, Corigliano Calabria, Crotone, Vibo Valentia marina and Taureana di Palmi». «The objective of the provision – we read in a note – «is to reduce the gap in competition with the ports operating in the international circuit of the Mediterranean, with particular attention to the port of Gioia Tauro exposed to the risk of serious losses of traffic at advantage of competing North African ports”.

The ceiling made available by the Port Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas for the year 2023 amounts to 1.5 million euros, a figure higher than last year by 500 thousand euros. Shipping companies, lines or shipping consortia that carry out goods transport activities in relation to their type of traffic will benefit from the reduction in the anchoring fee. «In particular – it is specified in the press note – a portion of the available sum, equal to 3.5% of the total, is intended for the reimbursement of the anchoring taxes paid by the car carriers, while the residual sum will be allocated for the reimbursement of the taxes anchorage paid by container ships and other types of ships”.

The benefits will be applied to all commercial ships, but not to passenger ships, and are based on specific criteria. In the port of Gioia Tauro, «container ships, and all other types of ships, with a gross tonnage exceeding 80 thousand tons will have a 100% reduction on the taxes foreseen by the measures indicated in the art. 1 of Presidential Decree 107/2009, while for those with a gross tonnage of up to 80 thousand tons the reduction will be 65%”. For car carrier ships (vehicle transport), “the benefit provides for a 90% reduction in taxes for ships of more than 30,000 gross tonnage, while ships up to 30,000 tons will enjoy a reduction of 65%” The cut in anchoring fees will be adopted “up to the amount of 1.5 million euros, deriving from the reduction of the current expenses of the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, relating to the financial year 2023” The reduction will be assigned according to the criterion of the proportion of anchoring fees paid during the calendar year 2023 by each shipping company, line or shipping consortium.
