Calabrian entrepreneurship, already severely desecrated by the two-year pandemic, has had to deal with five years of instability. Now it floats in the middle ground between unsustainable production costs and the difficulty of identifying new markets abroad. And the price paid by the fragile regional economic system was enormous: three billion seven hundred million euros. A loss that the Confartigianato Research Office places between 2022 and 2026, and attributes to the effects of wars, energy crises and geopolitical shocks.
The small size of the companies and the limited financial capacity have made it more difficult to absorb the shocks coming from international markets. The Calabrian account represents 1.2% of the 296.3 billion euros estimated at a national level. On average, 740 million per year are taken away from the production capacity, investments and growth of companies.
The data emerges from the report presented by Confartigianato on 28 October, which reconstructs the economic effects of the five-year period marked by the war in Ukraine, war tensions in the Middle East, monetary tightening and new US trade barriers. It is not a single crisis, but a succession of negative exogenous events that have generated a perfect storm that has affected: energy, credit and exports. And it is precisely this combined action that has made the economic recovery more complicated.
