Goodbye to the discount on excise duties on fuel: from tomorrow, as already widely announced by the government, also in line with the recommendations of the EU Commission, fuel prices will return to full prices burdened by the direct tax: thus, unless corner interventions are made, the full tank will start to rise again and diesel fuel could go back to exceeding two euros per litre. However, the Minister for Business and Made in Italy does not close the possibility of an extension: «We will evaluate what has happened and what could potentially happen also in light of the negotiations that are underway to completely unblock navigation in the Strait of Hormuz».

How much is the cut worth and what did the decree provide

Currently – the technicians recall – the cut in excise duties on petrol and diesel, also considering VAT, is worth 6.1 euro cents per litre. The government decree of 5 June provided that “starting from 7 June 2026 and until 3 July 2026, the excise duty rates are redetermined in the following measures: petrol, 622.90 euros per thousand litres; gas oil or diesel used as fuel: 622.90 euros per thousand litres”.

Estimates of new pump prices

Therefore, in the absence of an extension of the final discount starting from 4 July, the average price of diesel will rise to 1.94 euros per liter on the ordinary network and to 2.02 euros/litre on the motorway. Petrol will rise on average to 1.86 euros per litre, 1.95 euros on the motorway. The additional cost for a full tank of fuel will be 3.05 euros. Overall, to date, the excise duty interventions have cost the public coffers approximately 2 billion euros.

The Codacons protest: “Prices unrelated to the collapse of oil”

Codacons is critical and fears «a growth in prices at the pump which would be immediate and which, paradoxically, would occur despite the vertical collapse of oil prices: Brent, the reference index for the European market, has in fact gone from 95 dollars a barrel at the beginning of June to 70.8 dollars today, with a depreciation of -25.5% which, however, motorists have not enjoyed, due to the microscopic drops in prices at the pump. In the last month, in fact, the average price of diesel and petrol at distributors has only reduced by around 6%, despite the pressure of the Minister of Business Adolfo Urso on the oil companies to cut their prices”.

UNC’s appeal against speculation

The UNC asks: «the government renews the discount on excise duties. Given that it has done nothing to combat speculation, it has not modified the Consumer Code to allow the Antitrust to intervene against speculation even in the absence of agreements restricting competition or abuses of dominant positions, it has not modified article 501 and 501 bis of the Criminal Code to allow the Prosecutor’s Office to intervene against those who take advantage of wars or disasters to enrich themselves and increase the prices of goods, even without the need to hoard or hoard raw materials, given that with moral suasion Minister Urso has achieved nothing, at least I reconfirm the minimum discount of 5 cents, 6.1 with VAT at 22 percent”.
