Fortunately, the story of the 92-year-old man who passed away yesterday afternoon in Acquaformosa, in the Cosentino area, ended with a happy ending. The elderly man, who had left his home to collect chestnuts, had not returned, immediately triggering the alarm of his family.

The searches, which began late on Sunday afternoon, involved the Fire Brigade of the Castrovillari Detachment, the Calabria Alpine and Speleological Rescue, the Carabinieri and numerous volunteers.

In the early hours of this morning, a basket identified by Alpine Rescue rescuers allowed the search area to be limited. Shortly afterwards, the elderly man was found in a bush, injured and in obvious difficulty, probably following a fall. Due to the particularly difficult terrain, the intervention of the “Drago VF 62” helicopter of the Fire Brigade was necessary, with the helicopter rescuers on board, who proceeded with the recovery of the unfortunate victim.

The man, conscious at the time of his discovery, was entrusted to the 118 medical staff and transferred by helicopter to the Castrovillari hospital for the necessary checks and treatment.

Thanks to the timeliness of the rescue operations and the coordination of the forces involved, the operation concluded positively after hours of apprehension for the entire community of Acquaformosa.
