A French-Canadian woman, 55-year-old Pascale Ferrier, was sentenced in Washington to nearly 22 years in prison for sending a letter containing ricin to then US President Donald Trump. Ferrier pleaded guilty in January to violating bans on the possession or use of banned biological weapons. The woman admitted to making ricin, an extremely toxic plant protein derived from castor beans, at her home in Quebec in September 2020. That same month she sent a “poisoned” letter from Canada to the White House addressed to Trump and others eight letters with ricin to eight law enforcement officials in the state of Texas. Her letter to Trump contained “threatening language” and called on him to withdraw from the upcoming election, according to the Justice Department.
