The big holiday has just begun. On the motorway the traffic lengthens and shortens like a rubber band, the ferries go back and forth to Sicily, in the airports you see families with trolleys and kids with backpacks on their shoulders. Millions of Italians are traveling to the sea, the mountains, the cities of art. Calabria is also filling up: hotels, restaurants, beaches, holiday homes, small shops have returned to life at the pace of summer. It’s the time of year when the territory changes pace.
But behind this summer there is another, much less festive story that concerns family accounts. Holidays cost more than before and not everyone leaves in the same conditions. For some families, a few days away from home is an expense that needs to be planned carefully. For others it has become an item that no longer enters the household budget. Openpolis found that in 2025, more than 30 percent of families with one or two children could not afford a week’s vacation away from home. Among families with three or more children the percentage exceeded 50 percent.
The data also concerns Calabria, where disposable income remains fragile and work does not always allow a family to count on two incomes.
