The eight little dogs stolen from the horror and entrusted to the care of a veterinary clinic in Messina will make it. They were destined for the black market of purebred dogs but from the checks carried out it was discovered that some suffer from congenital pathologies.
They belong to the pack of thirty-one dogs that were removed in recent days from the Taormina concentration camp during a joint operation conducted by the Messina and Catania sections of the National Animal Protection Agency in collaboration with the ASP veterinary service and the local municipal police. “They arrived at us in disastrous conditions – explains veterinarian Angela Spadaro, head of the clinic in Viale Giostra where the dogs were transported in an ambulance by volunteers from the Soccorriamoli association – with deep skin lesions caused by the tangled fur which we are still treating. Immediately shorn and washed, they are now in stable conditions and the therapies are continuing. We have discovered that some of them suffer from serious pathologies and require constant attention”. These are purebred dogs (spitz, poodles, Maltese), destined for the illegal market by breeders without a shred of heart or scruples. For the moment, the person responsible has been reported while Enpa has announced that it will be a civil party in the legal proceedings. “When animals become commodities – say Alessandra Parrinelli and Giuseppe Patricello of Enpa – dignity ends and horror begins. The illegal market transforms them into objects to be sold, causing these consequences. Real concentration camps can hide behind a shop window or an online advert. This is why we always recommend adopting rather than buying”.
