“I Captain” by Matteo Garrone has overcome the first obstacle in the race for the Oscars. The odyssey of the two young Senegalese who experience the drama of migrants between the detention camps of Libya and the boats in the Mediterranean has entered the shortlist of the 15 best international films chosen by the Academy in view of the ‘Star Night’. The next appointment for the films included in the shortlist will be January 23rd when the five finalists will be defined.
The Oscars are scheduled for March 10th in Los Angeles. Today the Academy announced the shortlists for ten award categories: in addition to best international film, best documentary, best short documentary, make-up and hair, original soundtrack, original song, animated short, live short, special visual effects and sound. The film phenomenon of the summer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, was included five times for its music (three times for best original song), but was surprisingly left out for its make-up and hairstyles.
Other films that did well in the technical categories include Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, mentioned four times including for best original song, and The Snow Society by JA Bayona: the Spanish film brought by Netflix and which closed the Venice Film Festival could follow the path of All Quiet on the Western Front which, after being selected, he won four Oscars this year. Oppenheimer, The Color Purple, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Poor Things and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon received three mentions each.
In the shortlist of 15 international films chosen out of a shortlist of 88, the competition for Garrone, who won the Silver Lion for direction at the Venice Film Festival, is very fierce. In addition to Bayona’s film about a rugby team that survives a plane crash in the Andes, the Italian candidate will have to deal with the British film The zone of interest by Jonathan Glazer based on a novel by Martin Amis, winner in Cannes of the Special Jury Grand Prix and with Perfect Days by Wim Wenders, a German-Japanese co-production brought from Japan after its debut in Cannes where it won the award for best leading actor with Koji Yakusho.
The other films passed in the first round they are the Armenian Amerikatsi, The Monk and the Gun from Bhutan, the Danish western Bastarden with Mads Mikkersen, the Finnish Foglie al Vento by Aki Kaurismaki, winner of the jury prize at Cannes, La Passion de Dodin Bouffant by Anh Hung Tran which France has Palme d’Or favorite Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet, the German The Teacher’s Lounge in which Leonie Benesh from Babylon-Berlin and The Crown stars, the Icelandic Godland, Totem by Lila Avilés from Mexico, The Mother of All Lies from Morocco, the documentary film Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Ania from Tunisia, and 20 Days in Mariupol by Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov, also nominated for best documentary.
