Ilaria Salis is free: the Hungarian police have just left her home in Budapest after removing her electronic bracelet. This is what ANSA has learned. The request for release was filed by her Hungarian lawyer Gyorgy Magyar immediately after her election as an MEP with Avs and this morning she was released from house detention.

Ilaria Salis can therefore now return to Italy, after the Hungarian police surprisingly arrived at the apartment where she has been hosted by an Italian family since May 23rd to remove her electronic ankle bracelet and issue her a document in Hungarian. The Avs MEP was arrested on 11 February 2023 on charges of being part of a criminal association and of having participated in two attacks against three far-right militants in Budapest. She remained in prison for over 15 months until the request made by her lawyers to be able to serve the precautionary measure under house arrest was accepted. After her election in Bruzelles with Avs thanks to over 175 thousand preferences, Salis was waiting for the proclamation and therefore for the documents certifying her status as a European parliamentarian. Her family had already bought tickets to join her to celebrate her 40th birthday in Budapest on Monday but now she will be able to celebrate it in Italy.

The dad: “I'll go get her and take her home”

Let's celebrate her birthday at home, I'll go get her and take her home”: this is how Roberto Salis commented to ANSA on the news of the release of his daughter Ilaria, who will be able to return to Italy after 16 months of detention in Hungary and celebrate his 40th birthday on Monday “I'm very happy – he added – I'm trying to organize my return as quickly as possible. I worked quietly but we didn't expect her to be released today. And instead she called me the lawyer Magyar to tell me that the police were on their way to free her. And now I'm going to get it.”
