For the first time ever, a woman conducted an orchestra in Iran. His name, Classic Fm, a UK radio station, says is Paniz Faryousefi, and he conducted a concert by the Tehran Symphony Orchestra at the Unity Hall in the Iranian capital and did so while wearing a headscarf. This also makes her the first female conductor of any Iranian symphony orchestra since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Faryousefi conducted this week’s ‘Land of Simurgh’ concerts, featuring pieces by Iranian composers Aftab Darvishi and Golfam Khayam alongside pieces by Robert Schumann, Jean Sibelius and Aram Khachaturian.
