In Italy, almost one in three homes is unoccupied (27.2%) and this occurs despite the fact that inhabited homes have increased by 6.4% in ten years, between 2011 and 2021. This is reported in the Today Abitazioni report by Istat for 2021.
Empty homes are mostly found on the islands and in the south, but the record goes to Valle d’Aosta. Lombardy, on the other hand, has the highest density of housing: 234.7 per square kilometer, against the national average of 116.8.
Many old houses: 56.3% were built between 1961 and 2000, while 9.5% are over a hundred years old. Liguria, Tuscany and Piedmont are the regions with the oldest homes.
