The Nicholas Green Park in Cosenza is preparing to transform itself into a lively laboratory of social inclusion and ethical cohesion thanks to the “Special Sundays” initiative. On 13, 20 and 27 September, the green area will host a series of free events, featuring disabled people, “special” children, events open to all citizens, designed to encourage meeting, leisure and community dialogue.
The municipal administration, interpreting with particular sensitivity the needs of the most vulnerable groups and their families, enthusiastically supported the initiative. The Green Councilor, Valentina Varchera, has in fact favored a direct and operational comparison with the realities of the territory, placing accessibility, solidarity and hospitality at the center of the administrative agenda.
The project was born from the virtuous synergy between different Third Sector organizations: the Eva 2011 Cooperative, the Disabled Defense Movement Association (MDD) and, with an external contribution, the Insieme Odv Association. The primary objective is to trigger an authentic relational osmosis between young people with disabilities, families and citizens, taking advantage of the sharing of outdoor spaces to break down prejudices and cultural barriers, and transforming diversity into an opportunity for common enrichment. The calendar of events includes moments of musical entertainment, dance and inclusive recreational activities, alongside spaces for discussion curated mainly by the Disabled Defense Movement and its dynamic president, Gianfranco Cristiano.
The appointment on Sunday 20 September will be innovative, which – within the calendar of events – will host a special session dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence used to support the children of MDD, showing how technological innovation can concretely serve inclusion and personal autonomy.
All scheduled activities will be entirely free for participants, and the organizers’ commitment is offered free of charge. This initiative demonstrates how virtuous cooperation between a receptive municipal administration and the world of volunteering can generate tangible and lasting benefits for the entire community.
