The conditions of Damiano Pepe, 64 years old, known as «Tripolino», are stable. He was seriously injured in the ambush that occurred on Friday evening in the Lattughelle area, on the border between the territories of Corigliano-Rossano and Cassano allo Ionio. The man is still hospitalized in Cosenza hospital, where he was transferred after an initial surgery at Rossano hospital. His wife, Silvana Sibarelli, 60, was killed in the ambush and was shot. According to what has emerged so far, unlike what was learned immediately after the events, an armed commando would have reached the man and the woman while they were in their car near their home, just as they were returning home. As Pepe was about to open the gate of the house, the killers opened fire, mortally wounding the woman and only partially wounding him. At that point, Pepe apparently broke through both gates with the car and managed to escape the ambush, while there was nothing that could be done for his wife. Pepe is considered by investigators to be one of the leaders of the so-called Cassano nomad clan. He was released after serving over 26 years in prison for mafia association and murder. The motive and number of the killers are yet to be clarified. There is strict confidentiality regarding the investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri.
