Calabria tries in vain to reach its ivory tower by climbing laboriously along an inclined plane transformed into an endless slope. In the background, the sound of the footsteps of federalism approaching, a merciless choice for the South and for this region, among the most uncertain and suffering in the country. The idea of development in the South risks ending up in ruin, overtaken by the complexity of a world that will increasingly shrink from Naples downwards. Differentiated autonomy is a pitfall that breaks down into rational abandonment, imbued with awareness. All reports converge towards the same landing in Calabria and Cosentino because, after all, half of Calabria lives in Cosentino.
According to the INPS, 2023 ended with a positive net employment balance with new employment relationships exceeding terminations. However, this is a figure that is fed, above all, by fixed-term contracts which have grown compared to 2022 (from 26,852 to 29,407). In 2023, however, permanent contracts (permanent jobs) decreased with an overall figure of people who achieved employment stability falling below eleven thousand units (10,935). Overall, there are 539 thousand Calabrians who work, of which 197 thousand are from Cosenza.
The employment rate in Cosenza and its province remained almost stable (44.4% in 2022, 44.5% in 2023). However, the unemployment rate grew (in contrast to the national data), going from 15.6% in 2022 to 17.5% in 2023. Overall, the unemployed in Calabria are 102 thousand of which, almost half, namely 42 thousand, live in the Cosentino area. In line with the rest of the country, however, the decline in inactive people (between 15 and 64 years old) fell from 47.1% to 45.8%.
