INPS, observatory on foreigners: in 2024 there will be around 4 million foreign workers, 379 thousand pensioners and 252 thousand unemployment beneficiaries

The Observatory on Foreigners was published today. The complete data, relating to the period 2015-2024, are available in the “Statistical Observatories” section of the website www.inps.it, at the link https://servizi2.inps.it/servizi/associazionetoristatistici/1059.

In the year 2024 there are 4,611,267 foreign citizens, both EU and non-EU, present in the INPS databases, of which 3,980,609 (86.3%) are active workers, 378,645 (8.2%) pensioners and 252,013 (5.5%) recipients of income support benefits (unemployment or mobility). 75.4%, equal to 3.5 million people, come from non-EU countries, 6.2%, around 287 thousand, from EU15 EU countries (of which the United Kingdom, which has become non-EU since 2021, is no longer part) and 18.4%, around 850 thousand people, from the remaining EU countries.

From the analysis by country in 2024 we find that the main countries of origin of foreigners are: Romania, with 697 thousand people (15.1% of the total foreigners detected by the Institute’s archives), Albania with almost 446 thousand people (9.7%), Morocco (366 thousand, 7.9%), China (229 thousand, 5.0%) and Ukraine (225 thousand, 4.9%).

Among foreign citizens, the male gender prevails (57.4%), but with strong differences between countries, with maximum values ​​for Pakistan (94.5%), Bangladesh (93.9%), Egypt (92.2%), Senegal (82.4%), India (78.2%) and Morocco (71.3%) and minimum values ​​for Ukraine (21.8%), Moldova (33.6%), Peru (41.3%) and the Philippines (42.8%).

As regards age, non-EU citizens are generally younger: almost half are under 39 (46.1% compared to 29.9% of EU citizens); 42.4% are between 40 and 59 years old (against 52.7% of EU citizens) and 11.5% are over 60 years old (against 17.3% of EU citizens).

61.8% of foreigners registered in the Institute’s archives in 2024 reside or work in northern Italy, 23.1% in central Italy and 15.1% in Southern Italy (southern Italy and the Islands). Compared to the resident population, in the North the incidence of foreigners is 10.3 per 100 residents, in the Center 9.1 and in the South and Islands 3.5. At a national level the incidence stands at 7.8 foreigners per 100 residents.

The foreigners who work, equal to around 4 million in 2024, are mostly employees of the private sector, 3.5 million (58.3% male), with an average annual salary of around 16,700 euros. In detail: 2.7 million work in sectors other than agriculture (65.1% male) with an average annual salary of around 18,800 euros; approximately 314 thousand work in the agricultural sector (75.4% male) with an average salary of approximately 9,700 euros; almost 500 thousand are domestic workers (11.0% male) with an average salary of around 9,800 euros.
