Senator Nicola Irto, secretary of the Calabria Democratic Party, presented a question to the ministers of Health and Economy to find out how many Calabrian citizens received treatment outside the region in 2024, distinguishing between public and private affiliated facilities, and the breakdown of the related expenditure incurred for the so-called passive health mobility.
The initiative – explains a note – arises from the data of the Court of Auditors contained in the evaluation of the 2024 financial statement of the Calabria Region, according to which spending on healthcare services provided outside the region reached 308 million euros, with an increase of 21 percent compared to the previous year. «Behind these figures – explains Irto – there are thousands of families forced to emigrate for treatment, because in Calabria they are unable to access adequate services in acceptable times. To these 308 million – he explains – there is added a hidden cost that weighs on citizens: travel, food and accommodation costs that are often not reimbursed, due to too low ISEE thresholds. It is a system that penalizes the weakest and makes Calabria an ATM for national healthcare.”
The dem senator also recalls a central passage of the equalization judgment: the Court of Auditors recalled that Calabria has not yet left the health commissionerate and that, in the current conditions, it will hardly be able to do so. «This government commissioner – concludes Irto – has lasted for 15 years and has failed across the board. Today the government therefore has the political duty to put an end to it, providing the Region with the right tools to protect the right to health of Calabrian citizens.”
