Professors Alessandro Veltri and Alexa Guglielmelli took office today, having chosen the University of Calabria as the ideal location for the development of their research activities, attracted by the great international reputation and high scientific competence that distinguish the Calabrian hub. Their recruitment took place through an extraordinary procedure, the direct call procedure, reserved for high-profile scientists, winners of prestigious research programs or permanently employed abroad. Specifically, Alessandro Veltri took on the role of full professor of theoretical physics of matter, models, mathematical methods and applications, while Alexa Guglielmelli took on the role of researcher in physics for life sciences, the environment and cultural heritage.

UniCal’s strategy: incentives and funds for frontier research

The attraction of teachers with great international standing has characterized the institutional action of UniCal in recent years, and the renewed Board of Directors immediately intended to consolidate and strengthen this direction, providing advantageous measures for scientists who will choose the Arcavacata campus as the location to conduct their frontier research. The plan is aimed, in particular, at the winners of highly qualified international programs – such as the prestigious projects financed by the European Research Council (ERC), by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships and by the Italian Fund for Science (FIS) – to whom UniCal will guarantee direct call to their roles, supporting the costs through a specific University fund. Added to this significant economic commitment is a further investment in terms of resources and organizational flexibility. For the entire duration of the research program, the winners will have the possibility to request total or partial exemption from teaching activities, so as to focus and direct all their energy on scientific activity.

The comment by the rector Gianluigi Greco

«The entry into service of colleagues Veltri and Guglielmelli confirms the extraordinary attractive force of our research. To overcome the challenges of global competition we have launched an incentive package without equal in Italy: the winners of prestigious international programs will find a Campus ready to welcome them and which will offer a perfect environment for their studies”, explained the rector Gianluigi Greco. «Attracting and supporting these excellences means making a strategic investment in the future of the University and the territory, to generate innovation and further consolidate our scientific leadership».
