Lorenzo Sonego conquers the semifinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The 29-year-old from Turin, world number 58 and 10th in the draw, beat the 25-year-old Russian Pavel Kotov (number 63) 6-3 7-5 in the quarterfinals and will challenge the 33-year-old Belgian David Goffin (number 90) in the next round, who eliminated Luciano Darderi in the last 32.
Great walk also for Mattia Bellucci (will enter the top 100 in the next few days) who reaches the main draw of the US Open, overcoming the qualifications of the men’s singles of the US Open. The 23-year-old tennis player from Lombardy, number 102 in the world and 12th in the second round, defeated, in the decisive challenge, the Polish Kamil Majchrzak, number 169 in the world, in two sets with a score of 6-3 6-3. Bellucci thus becomes the tenth Italian in the main draw of the men’s singles at the US Open.
Thanks to these two exploits, the Italian men’s team has 10 tennis players in the top 100. And if Sonego (number 53) beats Goffin in the final, 6 of them will be in the top 50. Something unthinkable until a few years ago.
