The intervention of the Catanzaro DDA in the proceedings, resulting from the Karpanthos operation, which is taking place before the Court of Crotone, ends with a flurry of requests for condemnation. The operation against the ‘Ndrangheta began in September 2023, leading to the execution of 52 precautionary measures and also leading to political implications with the dissolution of the Municipality of Cerva. Prosecutor Veronica Calcagno formalized the requests on the basis of the conclusions presented at the hearing, outlining a complex accusatory framework and asking for significant penalties for the defendants who chose to be judged with the ordinary procedure. The highest request concerns Pietro Paolo Scalzi, for whom a sentence of 18 years in prison and a fine of 6 thousand euros was requested. For Venanzio Scalzi, however, the DDA asked for 15 years of imprisonment and the same fine, with the aggravating circumstance of recidivism. More limited, but still relevant, sentences were requested for Rosario Severini (4 years and 6 months), Antonio Scerbo (4 years and 10 thousand euro fine) and Giuditta Gaglione (2 years of imprisonment). For Giuseppe Colosimo the request amounts to 9 years in prison and a 10 thousand euro fine. Twelve years of imprisonment were requested for Alessandro Cropanese, considering his overall role in the numerous contested charges. Five years and 12 thousand euros fine for Angelo Elia, while for Berlingeri David the request is 4 months in prison and 800 euros fine, with reclassification of the crime pursuant to article 73 of Presidential Decree 309/90. For Giulietta Ascone and Luciano Ascone the DDA asked for 12 years’ imprisonment each and a 4,000 euro fine. Giovanni Greco was asked for ten years and six months, while Leonardo Zoffreo was asked for 6 years and a 1,500 euro fine. Finally, for Giovanni Antonio Evalto the request is 7 years of imprisonment. The position of Serrao Francesco is different, for which a request was made not to have to proceed for extinction of the crime following his death. The requests from the Prosecutor’s Office represent a crucial step in the process, which now enters the decisive phase. It will be up to the Court of Crotone to evaluate all the evidence and defense arguments before arriving at the sentence. The defense will begin their arguments starting from April 30th.
