The right construction site “at the wrong time”? This seems to be the tenor of the controversy of recent days around the historic Ponte di S. Antonio which precisely in this period – the traditional tredicina in honor of the patron saint of Nicastro, which began on Sunday, is celebrated – is frequented by pedestrians and pilgrims who go to the sanctuary.
The works for the arrangement of the small but fundamental road axis, which has long been in an advanced state of decay, with the paving of the area in cobblestones, began in fact in the last days of May and, according to at least the municipal ordinance, should be completed tomorrow, 3 June.
But, as was predictable, many citizens complain about the coincidence of the works with the start of the celebrations, criticizing the Administration at least for bad timing in planning the construction sites. Rosario Piccioni, a member of the Democratic Party, without mincing words, laments the disappointment of “the many faithful who are going to Sant’Antonio for the traditional thirteen and who are finding this situation”. Inconveniences which, for the most part, are caused precisely by the total closure of the bridge and which, despite the complete opening on the other side of Via Indipendenza, “favor” numerous crossings in the middle of the construction site.
