“We are happy and honored that Tropea you continue to give birth to illustrious people linked to surgery. The professor Luigi Bonavina, among the 7 best surgeons in the worldrecipient of the honorary scholarship of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), can be considered a worthy heir of the brothers Pietro and Paolo Bojano (Vianeo), the most famous rhinoplasty surgeons of the 16th century, considered the universal inventors of plastic surgery and , for this reason, included among the Distinctive Identity Markers (MID) that make our region unique in the world”.
This is what Mayor Giovanni Macrì declared, complimenting his illustrious fellow citizen for the prestigious international recognition that will be awarded on the occasion of the inauguration of the ACS Clinical Congress 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the largest training meetings of surgeons in the world. “Professionals of Bonavina’s caliber – she adds – contribute to fueling the international reputation of our destination and of Calabria”.

Their method was defined by Tommaso Campanella as tropiensium magic. Their innovative technique involved using flaps of skin taken from the inside of the left arm; so much so that it became a model and was applied in the rest of the West.
