Marine Le Pen has officially announced her candidacy in the 2027 French presidential elections, despite the confirmation on appeal of the conviction in the trial of the Front National’s European parliamentary assistants. The leader of the Rassemblement National, interviewed by Tf1, explained that she will appeal to the Court of Cassation, underlining that the appeal suspends the effects of the sentence.
“Given that I have the possibility of appealing to the Court of Cassation, which was not necessarily foreseen in other cases, and given that the appeal to the Court of Cassation suspends the effects of the sentence, I will campaign without an electronic bracelet”, declared Le Pen, thus confirming her desire to run for the Elysée in 2027.
Marine Le Pen had her first degree sentence confirmed to four years in prison, two of which were suspended.
The Court: «The facts are serious»
“The facts are serious”, despite “the absence of personal enrichment”. This was said by the president of the Paris Court of Appeal, Michèle Agi, during the reading of the appeal sentence in the case of the European parliamentary assistants of the Front National.
Le Pen entered the courtroom of the Palace of Justice in Paris and sat in the same seat she occupied during the trial to hear the decision. Her two lawyers remained next to her, while the room was packed with journalists.
The leader of the RN left the Paris court before the conclusion of the reading of the reasons for the sentence. With a serious expression, she headed to the party headquarters, where she met the president of the RN, Jordan Bardella, and the leaders of the political formation, before speaking on the TF1 news program in the evening.
The appeal to the Court of Cassation and the race to the Elysée
The announcement of the candidacy changes the political scenario in view of the 2027 presidential elections. Le Pen has in fact made it clear that she will appeal to the Court of Cassation and that, according to French law, this appeal suspends the effects of the sentence. For this reason he claims to be able to regularly campaign without having to wear an electronic bracelet, an element he had previously indicated was incompatible with a candidacy for the Elysée.
