“Europe is unfinished”, said the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella at the Thea workshop in Cernobbio recalling the “recent lucid choices by the von Der Leyen Commission following the pandemic”. These are “significant choices of discernment” that resulted in the “courageous policies on debt with Next Generation EU”.

Mattarella added that reducing public debt is an “unavoidable necessity”explaining that “on the debt front, Italy has paid more interest than France and Germany together, and yet it is a reliable payer” and underlining that the trend in interest rates “is a questionable thermometer”.

“There is still a long way to go to give rationality to a government bond market that also takes into account the situation of family wealth – he continued -. A European dimension could build truth. Not an invitation to neglect the debt, which must be reduced, but an invitation to complete the European financial building”. Mattarella then invited us to “reflect, broaden our horizons and therefore adopt solutions for the challenges that the world is facing starting from sustainability”.

Also present in Cernobbio is Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, who has opened up to a possible meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky: “I hope he will be here”.
