“Don’t make me talk about primaries. I’m tired. I want to talk about citizens’ problems. The primaries will take place immediately after the program.” This is how Giuseppe Conte began at the meeting in Pizzo with Calabrian farmers and hauliers on strike against high fuel prices. The visit of the president of the 5 Star Movement was announced by deputy Riccardo Tucci, who reiterates the party’s closeness to those suffering the effects of the crisis. The program includes a press point in the square in front of the Pizzo motorway junction, in Angitola, on the occasion of the meeting with the workers who, while waiting for Conte, had a conversation with Tridico, Orrico, Bruno and Scutellà.
“We are here – said Conte – because your demonstration is peaceful. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here. There is a desire to draw the Government’s attention to economic and daily life conditions that have become difficult or even prohibitive. There is real discomfort here, which has accumulated over time. It is not lost on us that these demonstrations have been obscured by the national news, but this thing has been going on like this for some years. They tell us that we are doing well, that our economy is doing well. But they are partial data, you look only what you want to see. The situation is getting complicated and today the Government’s responsibility is to have denied that these problems exist. The situation is difficult, structural solutions must be found and nothing has happened. Agriculture is in difficulty, the supply chain is in crisis: it is a systemic problem. Whoever produces does not set the price and this is the real issue. Sixty million for farmers?
According to Conte “structural solutions are needed but if we pretend nothing has happened we will never be able to intervene. Whoever speaks to you has governed: I have faced emergencies, I have prevented the country’s production chains from succumbing. It has not been easy, no one has a magic wand, but it must be addressed seriously”.
Talarico (Mta): “We don’t know if we will reach the end of the year”
Matteo Talarico: “We don’t know if we will reach the end of the year, we need structural responses. We are working below cost – underlined the MTA coordinator – and the profit margin is not there. It is an unsustainable situation”.
