The commemorative plaque was discovered and inaugurated centenary of the fire of July 10, 1924when it was devastated the former American neighborhood in shackswhich extended from the Zaera torrent to the current Via Roosevelt and from Viale San Martino to Via Croce Rossa.
The ceremony was presided over by the Mayor Federico Basile with the councilor for cultural policies and toponymy Enzo Caruso. “This initiative, in agreement with Mayor Basile, like others already realized, – declared Caruso – has cultural and identity purposes to remember, especially to students and the younger generations, what happened in the past. This plaque in fact recalls a catastrophe that struck our city, but that was also a great moment of human solidarity thanks to the humanitarian intervention promoted by the President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, in favor of the survivors of the 1908 earthquake”.
The new plaque, promoted by the president of Unitre of Messina Basilio Maniaci and blessed by Msgr. Mario DiPietro It was placed on the facade of block 56, corner of Viale Europa – Viale San Martino, sea side.
The former American Quarterfor 15 years it was the seat of the main institutions of Messina, where, among others, Giorgio La Pira, Salvatore Quasimodo and Salvatore Pugliatti were educated.
