The mayor Federico Basile signed a new ordinance which extends the closure of the municipal villas and the Gran Camposanto until midnight on 27 December 2024. The provision became necessary, following the request of the in-house company Messina Servizi Bene Comune, in order to allow the same company to continue the safety measures, pruning and removal of trees and branches that fell due to the extraordinary weather event recorded yesterday, Monday 23 December. “From checks and technical investigations carried out in the Gran Camposanto area by the Cemeteries Service staff – states the ordinance – the fall of tall trees, branches and foliage was detected; that due to atmospheric events there are many areas where safety conditions for users are not guaranteed; that the census and removal operations of trees, branches and foliage fallen following the strong winds are still underway; and that it is also necessary to proceed with the verification of the stability of the tree species within the Gran Camposanto in order to guarantee the safety of users even in the event of further windy events”. Therefore, for the protection of public and private safety, pending the elimination of dangers and checks on the trees and plants within the Gran Camposanto, as well as the municipal villas, they will remain closed until midnight on Friday 27 December 2024.
The union provision also establishes that on December 26th until 1pm and on December 27th until 4.30pm the reception of the deceased is permitted exclusively in the square in front of the main entrance; and burial operations are also permitted on 26 and 27 December.
