D-Day is approaching. And no, no Normandy landings in sight. The D stands for resignation, in the corridors of Palazzo Zanca the “if” no longer seems to be under discussion, but only the “when”, and the latest rumors point to next weekend as the decisive moment. Moreover, even in the usual Tuesday press conference, the ones which, in fact, launched the electoral campaign well in advance, the early elections are spoken of with an even suspicious ease, if only it were not accompanied by various clues scattered here and there.
When we ask Cateno De Luca if, unlike the last meeting (pre-Caltagirone), this time he smells elections, he responds like this: «Not even today do I smell elections. But that doesn’t mean I won’t feel it tomorrow.” Elections inevitably become the dominant theme this time too. «Choices – says mayor Federico Basile – are always linked to political and administrative reasoning, they are not personal, and I believe that all the choices made by my administration and the previous one were made conscientiously and seriously, for the good of the city. Even possibly early elections would be done conscientiously, aimed at the administration of a city which today, I want to remind you, still has a mayor.”
